A sequel to joker was never technically in the plan. When director Todd Phillips made his anti-superhero film about the classic Batman villain – with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role – it had to be a movie, period. Although Phillips admitted that he would be willing to make a sequel under the right circumstances, he went so far as to point out a month before the film’s release in October 2019: “We have no plans for a sequel… The movie isn’t on it designed.” [avere] a continuation. We always presented it as a unique film and that’s all.”
Apparently, the global box office of more than $1 billion, eleven Oscar nominations and two wins – Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir – as well as the generation of one meme after another have changed things.
However, an official confirmation did not come until June 2022. At that time, Phillips shared an image of the script Joker: Folie à Deux on Instagram, along with a photo of Phoenix browsing the pages while smoking a cigarette. Soon after, there were reports that Lady Gaga would be playing the role of Harley Quinn and that Zazie Beetz would be reprising her role from the original film. Filming finally began in December 2022 and ended in April 2023.
With the release date of Joker: Folie à Deux With the film scheduled for October 4th (basically just six months away), here’s everything we know about the film.
What does the title mean?
“Folie à deux” literally means “madness of two” from French and is used in psychiatry to describe a common psychotic disorder – for example, one that two might have Rogue crazy like Joker and Harley Quinn. In other words, it’s the perfect Joker sequel pun combined with the “evil Arthur Fleck stand-up meme.”
Who is in the cast?
Phoenix will return as Fleck, the tormented, mentally ill clown and aspiring stand-up comedian who is driven insane by his evil alter ego Joker. Gaga becomes Dr. Playing Harleen Quintal, a psychiatrist at Gotham’s infamous Arkham Asylum, where (spoiler alert) Fleck ends up at the end of Joker. It’s not clear how much Slide for two will be exactly like in the comics, but in tradition, Quintal takes care of Fleck/Joker in Arkham, only to fall victim to his manipulations, fall in love with him and become his accomplice: Harley Quinn.
Beetz, meanwhile, returns as Sophie Drumond, a single mother, Fleck’s former neighbor and the object of his disturbing affection. Leigh Gill will return as one of Fleck’s former clown colleagues and Sharon Washington will once again play Fleck’s social worker.
As for the new additions, Joker 2 has a supporting cast of Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, Jacob Lofland, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey. However, it is unknown who they will all be playing.
It’s a musical, right?
Yes. Did you think they would hire Lady Gaga and not let her sing?

According to reports, there’s still a chance that one or two original numbers could still make their way into the film.
Is it censored in any way?
